Can you suggest some practical resources on Reggio Emilia?
Here are a few resources that are available on Reggio Emilia. Some are available in the CECDE Library and your
local library may be able to source some also.
- Abbott, Lesley; Nutbrown, Cathy (Editor) (2001). Experiencing Reggio Emilia : implications for pre-school provision. Berkshire: Open University Press.
- Gestwicki, C. (2001). Authentic Childhood: Experiencing Reggio Emilia in the Classroom. USA: Delmar.
- Hendrick, J. (1997). First steps to teaching the Reggio way. USA: Pearson.
- Valentine, Marianne (2001). The Reggio Emilia approach to early years education. Dundee: Learning and Teaching Scotland.
- Wurm, Julianne P. (2005). Working in the Reggio way : a beginner's guide for American teachers. Minnesota: Redleaf Press; NAEYC.
I have been looking at your latest report Early Childhood in Ireland - Evidence and Perspectives
and was interested to get a copy of the background Review Document. Would you be able to email me a copy
of it? Is the CECDE planning to organise a conference or seminar on the issues raised in the report?
The Review Document is now available on request from the CECDE - just contact us by email or at 01 8842110.
There are no plans to organise a seminar on these issues specifically though planning is underway for our next
conference so it might find a place there.
Would you have any stats on the number of children with special needs in early years settings?
In 2003 we published 'On Target? An Audit of Provision of Services Targeting Special Needs and Disadvantage Among Children from
Birth to Six Years in Ireland' and this is available on our website here. The Health Research Board
publish statistics annually too and these can be found here.
I would be obliged for any information you may have on sample policies
for pre-schools regarding (1) Child Protection and (2) Equality and Diversity.
Two very practical resources would be of interest to you - Supporting Quality by Geraldine French and Every Child Matters by
Marie Willoughby. The first is a set of guidelines for best practice in early childhood services and the second is a
guide to developing anti-discriminatory practice in early childhood services.
You can obtain both reports from Barnardos (by email or tel: 01 4549699). We also stock them in our
library based here in St. Patrick's College and you're more then welcome to visit us to look at those resources and
more here. Unfortunately we don't lend material from the library, it is reference only.
I am interested in applying for an Early Start Programme as a Childcare Worker. Please could you send me any information you may have on these programmes
and how I may go about applying for the above?
The CECDE does not administer the Early Start programme but you can access information on it
on the Department of
Education's website.
This page also contains a list of all preschools involved in the programme.
Contact the Department of Education directly for information on how to apply for a post on 01 8896400.
